Shrink a video. There are two modes with different characters. Quality mode (CRF) says how good it should look, so you cannot know the final size in advance. Target size mode takes the megabytes you want and works out the bitrate to hit it - the reliable choice when you have to fit a messenger or email attachment limit.
How to use
- Load a video and choose one of the two modes.
- In quality mode, set the CRF. Around 28 shrinks it without an obvious loss.
- In target size mode, enter the size you want in megabytes.
- Press Compress, then compare the before and after sizes below.
Frequently asked questions
- What is CRF?
- A constant quality target. Lower numbers mean better quality and bigger files. 23 is the default, around 28 usually shrinks a video without a visible difference, and past 32 you start to see smearing.
- The estimate does not match the result.
- The estimate in quality mode is a rule-of-thumb figure. Real size depends heavily on how much motion and detail the video has. When you need an exact size, use target size mode.
- What if I set a very small target?
- Quality drops a lot to meet it, and fast-moving footage smears badly. Squeezing a long video into a few megabytes gives something barely watchable, so lower the resolution as well in that case.
- Why is the output always MP4?
- It opens the most widely, and H.264 strikes a good balance between compression and speed. If you need another format, use the video converter afterwards.
Compression happens entirely in your browser and the file is never uploaded. Target size mode subtracts the audio share (128kbps) before calculating the video bitrate, so the result lands close to your number without matching it exactly. The first run has to fetch the processor (about 32MB).
