About this tool
Pull just the sound out of a video and save it as MP3, M4A or WAV. Handy for listening to a lecture recording in the background, or keeping only the voices from a meeting capture. Conversion runs inside your browser, so the file is never uploaded.
How to use
- Load a video or audio file.
- Choose the output format. MP3 is the one that opens everywhere.
- For a compressed format, pick a bitrate.
- Press Extract, listen to the result and download it.
Frequently asked questions
- MP3 or M4A?
- At the same file size, M4A (AAC) sounds better. But MP3 has been around for over twenty years and plays on absolutely anything. For an old car stereo or MP3 player, MP3 is the safe choice.
- When should I use WAV?
- When the audio is going into an editor for further work. It is uncompressed and lossless, but roughly ten times the size of an MP3. For plain listening there is no reason to pick it.
- Does maxing out the bitrate improve the sound?
- Not beyond the source. You are re-compressing audio that was already compressed inside the video, so a higher bitrate cannot exceed the original quality - it only makes the file bigger. 192kbps and up for music, 128kbps for speech.
- Can I feed it an audio file instead of a video?
- Yes. You can use it purely to change formats.
Processing happens entirely in your browser and the file is never uploaded. Extracting and distributing copyrighted audio can have legal consequences. The first run has to fetch the processor (about 32MB).
