About this tool

Open every square that has no mine, using the numbers as clues. A number tells you how many of the eight touching squares hold mines. Boards are generated inside your browser and nothing is sent to a server. There are three sizes โ€” beginner 9x9 (10 mines), intermediate 16x16 (40), and expert 30x16 (99) โ€” and you win the instant every non-mine square is open. Mine placement depends on where you make your first tap though, so playing the same board over a shared link only works if you start on the same square.

How to use

  1. Choose beginner 9x9 (10 mines), intermediate 16x16 (40) or expert 30x16 (99).
  2. Tap a square to open it. Your first tap is never a mine, and its neighbours are clear too, so the board opens up.
  3. Flag squares you think hold mines โ€” right-click, long-press, or switch on Flag mode and tap.
  4. Double-click (or middle-click) an already-open number to clear the rest around it, once the flag count matches.
  5. Share the link and your friend plays the same board.
  6. Watch the remaining-mine count and elapsed time at the top to track your progress.
  7. Open every non-mine square to win, or open a mine to lose instantly โ€” you never have to flag every mine.

Frequently asked questions

Can I die on the very first tap?
No. Mines are not placed until after your first tap, and the eight squares around it are kept clear too, so the first move always opens an area.
How do I flag on a phone?
Long-press a square (0.4s) or switch on Flag mode and tap. Long-press clashes with browser gestures on some devices, which is why the mode button is there too.
I tapped a number and suddenly died.
Double-clicking an open number clears everything around it once the flag count matches. If a flag was in the wrong place, a real mine gets opened โ€” convenient but risky, which is why a single click does nothing there.
Does the shared link give the same board?
Yes, the address carries a board number. Note that mine placement depends on where you first tap, so start on the same square to get an identical game.
Do I have to flag every mine to win?
No. You win the moment every non-mine square is open. Flags are just markers to help you avoid opening the wrong square by accident, not a win condition.
What happens if I place more flags than there are mines?
The remaining-mine counter at the top just goes negative โ€” there is no other penalty for flagging more squares than there are actual mines.
When does the timer start?
It starts the moment your first tap generates the board, and stops once the game ends. The clock does not run before your first tap.
What happens to my game if I change difficulty?
Clicking a difficulty button resets every opened square and flag and starts fresh with a new board number. You cannot resume the previous game.
Can I see where the mines were after I lose?
Yes. Once you hit a mine, every remaining mine on the board is revealed so you can see exactly where things went wrong.
