About this tool

Standard chess. Castling, en passant and promotion all work, and you simply cannot make a move that leaves your own king in check. The first two people take the seats; everyone after that watches. Illegal moves are rejected by the server, so the rules hold even if you poke at the page.

How to use

  1. The board appears right away. On your own you can move both sides, so you can play across one screen or just practise.
  2. Tap a piece to see its legal squares marked with dots, then tap one to move.
  3. Press "Play together" to create a room, then send the invite link.
  4. The first person to open the link becomes your opponent; anyone after that watches.
  5. Resign or press "New game" to start over. Sides swap on a new game.

Frequently asked questions

Why does nothing happen when I tap?
On your opponent's turn pieces will not select. If you are watching, you cannot move at all. The server remembers who took the seats, so editing the page will not let you move on someone else's turn.
What if more than two people join?
The first two play and the rest watch. Watchers get the same live connection, so they see each move as it lands.
What does a pawn promote to?
Always a queen. Underpromotion is rare in casual games, and a chooser popup would interrupt every promotion.
