About this tool

See whether your microphone is picking up sound and whether the level is right. As you speak, the input level moves as a bar and a dBFS figure, and the spectrum below shows which frequencies are coming through. Recording and playing it straight back confirms that the encoder works too, not just the microphone. Audio is processed only inside your browser and never sent to a server.

How to use

  1. Press Turn mic on and allow the permission prompt from your browser.
  2. Talk as you normally would on a call and watch the level bar and the verdict line below it.
  3. Check that the spectrum moves. A completely flat spectrum means no sound is arriving.
  4. Press Start recording, speak for a few seconds, stop, and listen back in the player that appears.

Frequently asked questions

The dBFS number is always negative. Is something broken?
That is normal. dBFS puts digital maximum at 0, so real sound always sits below it. Roughly -12 to -6 is a comfortable level for calls.
Why can I not hear myself through the speakers?
That routing is left out on purpose. Sending the microphone straight to the speakers causes feedback for anyone not wearing headphones. Use the recording playback to check instead.
The level barely moves.
Check in this order: the mute switch on the microphone itself, the input volume in your operating system, and whether the device selected in the list is the microphone you are actually speaking into. On laptops the built-in mic and a headset are both listed and the wrong one is easy to pick.
Can I save the recording?
The player menu offers a download, but this is a testing tool, so the recording lives only in browser memory and disappears when you reload the page.

This tool analyses only the audio that reaches the browser. Noise suppression and automatic gain control may already have been applied by your operating system or browser, so the waveform here is not necessarily the raw microphone signal.
