About this tool
Enter the credits and grade for each course and get your overall GPA, your major GPA and total credits earned in one place. Three scales are supported - 4.5, 4.3 and 4.0 - and because each scale uses a different set of grades (4.5 has only A+ and A, while 4.3 and 4.0 add A- and B-), the grade choices change with the scale. Give it a target and it also works backwards to tell you what you need next term.
How to use
- Pick the scale your school uses: 4.5, 4.3 or 4.0.
- Choose credits and a grade for each course, and turn on the Major button for major courses.
- Use Add course until every course this term is listed.
- Enter a target cumulative GPA and next term credits to see the grade average you need.
Frequently asked questions
- How are pass/fail courses handled?
- By default they are excluded from the GPA. A P adds to earned credits but not to the average, and an NP counts for neither. If your school converts a P to full marks, uncheck the exclusion box and it will be counted.
- What happens to my GPA if I fail a course?
- An F counts as 0 in the average and is left out of earned credits. That makes the F pull your GPA down exactly as it really does, which is what you want when deciding whether to retake it. Rules differ by school, so compare with your handbook.
- What happens to my grades if I switch scales?
- Each grade moves to the nearest equivalent by proportion. An A- (3.7) on the 4.3 scale becomes a B+ on the 4.5 scale, because the 4.5 scale has no A- at all.
- What exactly does the target calculation do?
- It works out the grade average you would need next term for your cumulative GPA to reach the target once next term is added to what you already have. If even a perfect term falls short, it tells you so.
