About this tool
Character Count shows character count with and without spaces, byte size, word count, line count, and manuscript-sheet count for whatever text you paste in. Useful for cover letters, resumes, and any submission with a length limit. Everything is calculated instantly in your browser and your text is never sent to a server.
How to use
- Paste or type your text. The "Paste from clipboard" button can load it directly.
- Use "Insert sample" if you want to see it working on example text first.
- Character count (with/without spaces), byte size, word count, line count, and manuscript-sheet count update live as you type.
- Use "Clear" to start over.
Frequently asked questions
- Does the character limit include spaces?
- It depends on the platform you are submitting to. This tool shows "with spaces" and "without spaces" counts separately so you can match whichever rule applies.
- Why is the byte count different from the character count?
- Bytes are measured in UTF-8. Letters, digits, and spaces take 1 byte each, but most Korean characters take 3 bytes, so text with more Korean content has a much higher byte count than character count.
- How is the manuscript-sheet count calculated?
- It is based on the Korean manuscript-paper convention of 200 characters (including spaces) per sheet, rounded up. Treat it as a rough guide rather than an exact print specification.
- Do emoji or special characters count as one character?
- Yes, each visible character generally counts as one. Emoji built from multiple code points, such as flags or skin-tone variants, can count as more than one.
Byte size is measured as UTF-8. If a platform uses a different encoding such as EUC-KR, its actual limit may differ from this value.
